Why We Have an Avoid List

Every baby gear category has products that are genuinely unsafe or so unreliable that recommending them would be irresponsible. We don't review these products favorably and we don't include them in our 'best of' picks. We do cover them on this page so that parents who land here from search queries like 'is the Graco Slim Spaces safe' or 'Fisher-Price swing recall' get accurate information instead of marketing copy from manufacturers. Our criteria for the Avoid list: active CPSC recalls, documented safety incidents that haven't yet reached the formal recall threshold, or quality issues so widespread that the typical buyer experience is significantly worse than competing products at the same price. We update this page when new recalls are announced or new safety information emerges.

Older 4moms MamaRoo (versions 1.0–4.0) and RockaRoo — Active Recall

**Status:** ACTIVE CPSC RECALL. **Issue:** Restraint straps can dangle below the seat when the swing is not in use, posing a strangulation risk to crawling infants who pull themselves up to the seat. **Affected models:** 4moms MamaRoo versions 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 (model numbers 4M-005, 1026, 1037). 4moms RockaRoo (model number 4M-012). **Action:** A free repair kit is available at uppababy.com/mamaroo-4moms-recall. If you own one of these products, request the kit and stop using the product as a stationary object near crawling infants until the kit arrives. If you're considering buying one used, verify the model number BEFORE purchase and request the kit before use. **Important distinction:** The current UPPAbaby Mamaroo Smart Swing (the rebranded version sold under UPPAbaby's ownership) is NOT part of this recall and is safe to buy. Always verify which version of the MamaRoo you're considering.

Older Fisher-Price Cradle 'n Swing — Active Recall

**Status:** ACTIVE CPSC RECALL. **Issue:** 5 reported infant deaths from suffocation during use. All deaths involved babies being used to sleep in the inclined seat. **Action:** Do not purchase this product, used or new. Stop use of any owned units immediately. Contact Fisher-Price for refund or replacement information. **Important distinction:** The Fisher-Price On-the-Go Swing (a different, smaller, travel-oriented product) is NOT part of this recall and is safe to buy as a current production travel swing. The older Cradle 'n Swing is the larger full-size product that shipped in various themes (including Snugapuppy and others). When in doubt, check the model number on the product against the CPSC recall database at cpsc.gov. This recall is also a reminder of the universal rule: no swing should ever be used for sleep, regardless of brand, model, or 'safety' features. The Cradle 'n Swing deaths happened in a product that was thought to be safe at the time. Future deaths can be prevented by following the AAP/CPSC sleep guidance regardless of which swing you own.

Graco Slim Spaces Compact Baby Swing — Significant Concerns, No Formal Recall

**Status:** NO FORMAL CPSC RECALL. Significant consumer complaint volume. **Issue:** Hundreds of customer complaints across Walmart, Amazon, and Graco's own product page describe a defect where the swing accelerates uncontrollably to maximum speed (sometimes called 'turbo mode' by users). Reports include babies being flung forward in the seat and hitting nearby toddlers and pets. Walmart's 'Etcher' colorway showed 42% one-star reviews. **Investigation status:** Consumer Reports investigated in late 2024 and could not replicate the defect in lab testing on 8 units. Graco has not issued a formal response or recall as of late April 2026. **Our position:** The complaint volume is substantial enough that we cannot recommend this product. The fact that Consumer Reports couldn't replicate the issue is not the same as confirming the product is safe — many real-world defects are intermittent and don't surface during short lab testing. Until Graco issues a formal response or independent testing rules out the issue, we recommend avoiding the Graco Slim Spaces. **Alternatives:** For a compact, foldable swing in the same price range, the Maxi-Cosi Cassia or the smaller-footprint Munchkin Bluetooth are strong alternatives without these reliability concerns.

Graco Simple Sway Baby Swing — Quality Issues

**Status:** NO RECALL. Documented quality issues. **Issue:** Across major retailers (Amazon, Walmart, Target, Buy Buy Baby), the Graco Simple Sway carries a 3.1–3.3/5 star rating across 600+ reviews. Common complaints include motor noise, level-1 speed too vigorous for newborns (the swing has no 'gentle' mode appropriate for true newborns), and motor failures within the typical useful-life window. We don't see any safety incidents but the quality issues are widespread enough to recommend against purchase. **Our position:** Not a safety issue, but a quality issue significant enough to warrant warning rather than recommendation. At a similar price point, the Munchkin Bluetooth has a 4.4+ star rating with smoother motion and a stronger reliability record. The Momcozy CocoSway provides multi-motion capability that the Graco Simple Sway lacks at a lower price. **Alternatives:** Munchkin Bluetooth Baby Swing (single-motion, smooth, reliable) or Momcozy CocoSway (multi-motion, lower price than the Mamaroo).

Things We Watch For (Future Updates)

We monitor the CPSC database, major retailer review patterns, BabyGearLab testing, and Consumer Reports investigations on an ongoing basis. When new recalls or significant safety concerns emerge, we update this page within 7 days and add notices to the relevant individual product reviews. If you've experienced a safety incident with any baby swing, you can report it to the CPSC at saferproducts.gov. Your report becomes part of the public record and can contribute to future recall actions if patterns emerge. If you've found this page useful, sharing it with other parents who are shopping for baby gear is the most valuable way to support our work.
